7 mangoes, 4 guards and 6 dogs for security; 'Miyazaki' worth Rs 2.5 lakh!... The Rani-Sankalp couple has hired security guards at a mango orchard in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, for fear of thieves. It would be a mistake to think that this is to protect acres of farmland. They have deployed 4 security guards and 6 dogs to protect the seven mangoes that are ripening in in two small bags. This is because these are Miyazaki mangoes which fetch more than Rs 2.5 lakh per kg in the international market.
Miyazaki mangoes from Japan are the most valuable mango in the world. The couple was given this special mango sapling by an acquaintance during a train journey to Chennai. Unaware of the importance of mangoes, they planted them in the fields.
It was only later that it was realized that these mangoes were so valuable. It had made headlines last year when the flour was ripe. But within three days of the news, 14 mangoes were stolen.
Security and dogs were deployed for security so that no such mishap could occur during the meal. Many people approach the concept by saying that mango can cost up to Rs 21,000. But they say they do not intend to sell a single mango and want to grow new mango seedlings from their seeds.
Unlike other mangoes, Miyazaki mangoes are characterized by a ruby-like red colour. They get their name from the fact that they are grown in the Japanese city of Miyazaki. They are also known as the 'Egg of the Sun'. Miyazaki mangoes are king in terms of taste. A ripe mango weighs more than 350 grams. They are also highly medicinal.
